Is Piney Lake Colorado Open?
Piney River Ranch is open seasonally, from June 21st through the last Saturday in September. During our season, we are open from 9am to 4pm, daily. The road to Piney stays open beyond the closing date of the ranch.
Is Piney Lake public?
Piney Lake is not entirely private as the claim from Piney River Ranch suggests. If you find a local map you will see there is US Forest Service property on part of the lake, and this allows for public access.

This dirt road begins at the paved Red Sandstone Road near Vail and ends at either Piney Lake or Hwy 131 north of Wolcott: This road gets heavy vehicle traffic and also a fair number of mountain bike riders, so please share the road.

From the I-70, take exit 176 for Vail Village. Take roundabout exit to North Frontage Road west. Drive 1.0mi to Red Sandstone Road: turn right. Drive 0.8mi to the dirt Forest Service Road #700.
How long does it take to get to Piney Lake?
Reaching the lake does require about 45 minutes (~10 miles) of dirt road driving. The road conditions are fair and most two-wheel drive should be able to handle the drive just fine. Piney River Ranch sits close to and operates the Piney Lake area.
What to do at Piney falls in Colorado?
The waterfall is just ok but makes for a relaxing spot to rest, eat, drink and recharge. Just as the waterfall is a great destination for part one, the Piney lodge is also a wonderful place to stop for food and drink when you are done. Sit outside and enjoy the lake and Mountain View.
Which is the best part of the Piney River Trail?
Best part of hike is the hike along piney river and lake during the first and last mile. Overall pleasant experience tho. The road up although bumpy wasn’t washed out and easily made it in the Tahoe without any issues. Enjoyed but wouldn’t necessarily think to bring friends back here for a second trip.
