How do you know if you have a bad freeze plug?
If you have water or coolant leaking from the side of your engine or between the engine & transmission, you most likely have a bad freeze plug. Sometimes the hole in the freeze plug is very small, and can periodically be blocked by debris from the cooling system.
How does a freeze plug go bad?
Causes Of Bad Freeze Plugs Freeze plugs don’t often get spoilt, but when they do, there is usually just one reason; when water freezes, it expands. If the water in your engine block freezes, it will expand and push against the freeze plug. For example, your freeze plug could leak because of your car’s heating cycle.
Will Stop leak work on a freeze plug?
Sometimes the hole in the freeze plug is very small, and can periodically be blocked by debris from the cooling system. If the leak is slow and small, a stop leak or block seal compound might work.
Can you reuse a freeze plug?
No – do not re-use it. The sides of a freeze plug are slightly tapered to become a press fit in the opening. Once the plug has been used, the sides have been bent in and it will not fit as tightly as it should. They are so cheap that it’s not worth the brain power to even think about it.
Can I drive with bad freeze plugs?
If you have no other option, you may be able to drive with a bad freeze plug. As long as you keep your engine coolant full and your engine never gets hot, you could limp your car along with a leaking freeze plug although we never recommend it. It’s messy and at any point could leak to your engine overheating.
What’s the best way to remove a freeze plug?
This process is pretty simple, you just want to be careful not to push the freeze plug back into the coolant passage in the process of trying to remove it. To help in doing that, a dowel is positioned at an angle – then hammered until the plug breaks free and pivots.
When to replace freeze plugs on a car?
Most often the water/coolant passage is on the other side of freeze plugs, and over time they can wear out and leak. A cheap, inexpensive part…it makes sense to change these during an engine rebuild. Follow along in the process, there’s even a video!
Where is the freeze plug on a Ford truck?
Wheel the floor jack under the engine. Place a wood block edge-wise between the jack spoon and the lip of the oil pan, on the freeze plug side. Pump the jack up only a few inches, to gain access to the freeze plug. Take the drift punch and place it on the freeze plug.
Why do freeze plugs pop out when block freezes?
