How long should you hold a Microlax enema in for?
Tighten your buttox muscles to prevent the solution from running out. Important: To allow stool to soften, it is important not to have a bowel movement immediately; you should wait at least 5 minutes. There will be a gentle bowel movement within 30 minutes after use.
Is Microlax discontinued?
Microlax enemas (12 pack) are discontinued. The manufacturer has a 4 pack available for hospital orders. There is no micro enema alternative.

Sodium citrate/sodium lauryl sulfoacetate/glycerol sold under the brandname Microlax and Micolette Micro enema, among others, is a small tube of liquid gel that is used to treat constipation. The main active ingredients are sodium lauryl sulfoacetate (0.90% w/v), sodium citrate (9.0% w/v) and glycerol.
How does a Microlax enema work?
The sodium citrate and sodium lauryl sulfoacetate in MICROLAX® soften the surface of the stool and increase the amount of fluid in the hard stool. As the water content increases in the stool, the volume increases in the rectum which stimulates the bowel movement. Effect is usually obtained within 5-15 minutes.
How do you give a Microlax enema?
Microlax is easy to use and is usually effective within 30 minutes, in adults and in children:
- Twist and pull the seal off the nozzle.
- Squeeze the tube slightly so that a drop of Microlax smears the tip and thus makes insertion easier.
- Insert the nozzle fully into the rectum (back passage).
Can you buy an enema from the chemist?
It also comes as an enema. This is a tube of liquid medicine which you squeeze into your anus (bottom). Docusate is available on prescription or to buy from pharmacies. There is one brand called DulcoEase that you can buy in pharmacies and shops.
