Can you change the ECM on a used Subaru Outback?
I have ECM issues with my 2008 outback XT, I purchased a used ECM, took it to the dealer and he said that he cannot change the VIN number in the new ECM so my car cannot pass the emissions. Is there any alternate way I can fix it? after reading this it’s not really clear if swapping ecu’s works.

On older models, the trans doesn’t even matter (pre 99). So no, you can’t swap in a used ECU on a 08 Outback XT without programming it as (among other things) the immobilizer won’t be programmed. I can’t say for certain if a used one is not programmable at all. . . but my experience has been yes they are.

Can you set up an ECU on a Tribeca XT?
I’ve set up a new ECU for a Tribeca simply by programming the immobilizer with SSM3, no vin writing required. It does require new keys as they lock to the car once programmed. Tribeca and XT have the same immo architecture so I have no reason to believe it won’t work but you may have problems getting your dealer to believe that.
