Replaced belt still doing the same. Stripped out belt tensioner, the self lubricating bearings were dirty and binding. Cleaned bearings and shaft with solvent, lubricated with a small amount of silicone grease. Problem solved.

Got this from Renault customer support – its an omission from the manual – Switch off the car and then without pressing any pedals press the start button 5 times in quick sucsession (less than 10 seconds). Exit the car and lock as usuall – car indicators should flash 5 times – this should deactivate the internal sensors.

How can I lock my car without the alarm?
You could try locking without the alarm at all. Open the drivers door, press the lock button on the console for more than 5 seconds, it should click and then shut the doors and check they are locked, unlock in the usual way. I had a problem with the bonnet alarm sensor and added some padding to depress the switch further.
