What is a VVTi cam gear?

What is a VVTi cam gear?

More & more vehicles are equipped with VVT cam gear to improve fuel economy performance. With altering valve lift movement, VVT system can provide better performance. The electronic technology allows right amount of oil supply to get into engine via variable valve timing solenoid adjustment.

How does a VVT gear work?

Basically, it varies the valve timing by shifting the phase angle of camshafts. For example, at high speed, the inlet camshaft will be rotated in advance by 30° so to enable earlier intake. This movement is controlled by engine management system according to need, and actuated by hydraulic valve gears.

How do I know if a cam phaser is bad?

Typically, worn phasers create a loud and rough idle. Often, a knocking noise is heard. In some instances, the noise is not due to wear in the phasers but rather low oil pressure due to cam bearing wear in the cylinder heads. If that is the case, the heads may need to be replaced or machined.

Can a non-VVTi cam gear be replaced?

The same process can be followed on the non-vvti, the VVTi has only the exhaust side cam gear that can be replaced, the non-vvti can have the exhaust and intake cam gear swapped out.

How to mark timing belt for cam gear?

Follow instructions part 8a and 8b only, making sure your timing is at TDC 0 (white line) also mark your timing belt with something to match up with the cam gear marks like a crayon that I used. You will see the marks on the cam gear will match up with the notches at the back too.

How to install aftermarket cam gear and coolant?

Install everything back on and make sure TDC is at 0 and the cam gears line up with the marks, also make sure everything is put back together and you’re not missing screws and nuts that you put everywhere, also do a coolant flush/bleed system. Old cam gear out and new cam gear in – job complete!

Can a timing belt be replaced on a 2JZGTE engine?

This is a guide to replacing a cam gear/s on the 2JZGTE or 2JZGE engine. Some of these steps can be used to replace the timing belt, but not all, in the future I hope to have a full article on that process.
