What happens when a Cummins ISX shuts off?
When the truck does shut off, it does not really seem as though the fuel filter is empty of fuel. We can tell this by opening the drain screw on the bottom of the filter, and fuel will drain out. Sometimes the truck will re-start after shutting off without much trouble, but at other times it takes a lot of cranking.

Actually the ECM turns off power to the solenoid to lock the fan on. All you need is bad connection or wire in that circuit to cause this, or a faulty solenoid. The A/C high pressure switch and fan override switch are separate inputs to the ECM and could also be acting up. The fan clutch itself may be getting stuck, or have a bad air leak.

Click to expand… I’d check for air in the fuel. Run site glass and see what ya got. Pressures are very low. Sposed to be 90PSI cranking, 155PSI at 1600RPM. I have a vacuum gauge I put in the suction side of the fuel system at the pump.

What happens when you shut down a Volvo?
A friend of mine has a Volvo that does this. If you just let it idle, it will shut down. If you hit resume on cruise it will rev up to 700 rpm and run all night. On ISX if you hit resume or set with cruise turned off that will adjust your idle speed by 25 rpm increments but it will still shut down.

To bypass it, you have to sit and wait 4 mins, 30 secs, wait for a light to start flashing on the dash, and tap the throttle. Then it’ll run till it’s out of fuel if you let it. I’ve tried to bypass it by bumping up the throttle with the cruise control (which does work), but even then, 5 mins later, it’ll shut down.

What did I do when my ISX wouldn’t start?
Turns out it was the primer pump, apparantly the motor still worked, but the pump part had stopped working. Ended up pulling the line off the primer pump inlet and running a hose into a bucket with fuel. Turned the key on and started the pump.
