What causes wheel bearing noise in Hyundai i30?

Where does the clonking noise come from on an i30?
It sounds as if it is coming from the top of the suspension strut (or even struts). Any obvious ideas before I take it in for a look over? Probably the boot on the top of the shock. Reach over the tyres and push the (loose) plastic boot back up to the top of the shock absorber, till it kind-of clicks in to place.
