What are Sarali Swaras?
Sarali varisai are the fundamental sequences. They allow you to get a feel for the melody and the rhythm. The sequences follow a logical order – ascending and descending, up to the 7th varisai.

Purandardasa simplified the 108 ancient Talas into a system of 35 Talas, consisting of 7 Suladi Talas and their 5 vareities (Jatis). He formulated Sarali Varisa, Sapta tala Alankaras, Gitas in Malahari Raga and systematized the Abhyasagana for the beginners.
How long does it take to learn Sarali Varisai?
As a total beginner if the student is regular for classes and dedicates time to practice and improve then it may take atleast 4-6 months to get the perfectio in Sarali Swaras.
How can I learn Swaram?
Try this: Ask a student to sing sarali in a ragam, say Mayamalavagowla, stop her in the middle and ask her to sing a specific swaram. For example, when she is singing something like pa-dha-ni-sa, stop her and ask her to sing ga or ri.
What is Janta Varisai?
JanTai varisai are the second lessons, which involve double and triples of a single swara. These should be sung with force and emphasis from the first note to the second: sa sa ri ri ga ga etc…. The use of one plain note followed by a forceful one is a type of gamaka called spuritam.
