How can I open the rear hatch on my Subaru Forester?
The only way I can open and close it now is by crawling through the car and using the small finger hole manual release. I’ve replaced the entire latch assembly with a brand new one thinking the issue was simply the motor that operated the latch had quit. Unfortunately there is no change, it still doesn’t open or lock/unlock.

What do you hear when you unlock a Subaru Outback hatch?
When it unlocks and you press the button on the hatch door (the one under the Subaru logo), do you hear the lock mechanism working (ie a click sound). Or do you hear nothing at all?

My advise is not to leave the Subaru Dealer until they understand your issue and resolve it. The 4th gen outback doesn’t have a power lift gate. I too have noticed a slightly reduced opening of the manual rear hatch on my 2013. I wonder if it has to do with the gas struts.

I press the latch switch (Rear Gate Latch Switch on the wiring diagram). I guess this sends a signal to the “Keyless Entry Control Module” This would then send a signal to the “Rear Gate Lock Actuator” to open the latch. But it doesn’t.

Where is the rear hatch latch on a Subaru?
I removed the whole piece of finishing trim that the subaru logo is on and the harness is contained behind that. Easy to remove, just removed the plastic wall/trim inside the hatch and removed the rear wiper (3 nuts) and the finishing trim (5 nuts).
