Its a cambelt from crank to exhaust cams. There is a chain per back, from exhaust to inlet cams.

Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated). DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets. Observe all tightening torques. Raise and support front of vehicle. Drain coolant.

My apologies for misleading you, our XK’s definitely have timing chains. The 4.2 in the X150 has the metal tensioner bodies and there is no need to replace just because the car is 10 years old. Yes the auxiliary belts are due a change if not already done but you can just look for signs of cracking.

Why did my timing chain snap on my Jaguar?
Chains stretch, tensioners have to use plastic cushions for the chain, guides can break and are the most likely reason a chain snapped and the engine was ruined (tensioner failure usually only shows as a sliped tooth which causes a missfire). At 22K miles you should be safe. Thank you everyone for clearing that up.

When did I buy a 2004 Jaguar XJ6?
I own a 2004 Jaguar XJ6 3.0 petrol automatic which has completed 61,000. It has been main dealer serviced from new and I have owned it since August 2007. The car has been a delight to own. At its last service it was mentioned that the timing belt will need to be renewed shortly at a cost of £1,200.
