Does MSPCA euthanize?
While the MSPCA-Angell euthanizes animals primarily with severe medical or behavioral issues, in many parts of the country, the number of lost or unwanted animals surrendered to animal shelters exceeds the number of adopters. Euthanasia may be the only humane course of action for some of these animals.

How do I surrender my dog in Massachusetts?
To surrender an owned dog: Download and complete our Dog Surrender Form; Mail it to the shelter, fax it to 508-852-1868 or email it to [email protected]. Please submit a photo of the dog you wish to surrender. You’ll be contacted when we have space. Surrenders are made by appointment only.
How do you know when it’s time to put your elderly cat down?
Weight loss in itself is not an indication for euthanasia but if the cat’s body score falls to around 1.5 / 5 the cat is likely to feel weak, and lacking in energy. If there is no prospect of her gaining weight, you must consider euthanasia. If the body score falls further, to 1/5 then it is time to let her go.

Is surrendering a pet free?
Most are not non profits and funding may come from their local community or from animal rescues who support them. While some shelters might take your pet for free, others may require a nominal surrender fee to cover the cost of care for your pet.
Can I surrender my sick dog?
If you have a dog that has serious health problem or untreatable health problem please do not try to surrender him/her to a rescue. There is no need to prolong a sick/suffering dog’s life and transition him/her into rescue.
