Why is there air blowing out of my oil cap?
From my experience most motors will blow air from the oil filler cap due to the pressure generated in the crankcase from all of the moving components. Engine blow by is when the engine’s piston rings have worn out enough to allow combustion gases and pressure to escape past the rings, into the engine crankcase.
Can you remove oil cap while car is running?
Leaving the oil cap off on these vehicles will not only make a real mess, it will cause rough running, misfires (with P03xx codes) and lean running issues (with P017x codes). A small amount of oil is blown out. If left off eventually all the oil would be blown out. Or the engine would seize due to lack of oil.
What causes the oil cap to blow out?
Engines with a PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve that is clogged can build up internal pressure and cause a cap to blow off, unless the cars computer is smart enough to stop the engine. A pressurized crankcase can in time literally blow/pump all of your oil out resulting in a seized motor.
What happens if the oil cap comes off a new car?
Some new cars will shut down if the cap comes off as it affects the pvc, positive crankcase ventilation, systen and pollution controls. These remove blowby gasses in the cylinders past the piston rings, and keep a vacuum in the crankcase. Others don’t care. Regardless it is suggested to keep the cap on to keep contaminants out.
Do you open the oil filler cap when the engine is hot?
Do not open the oil filler cap when your car’s engine is hot. This is not advisable at all for safety reasons. On starting your car in step 1 above, don’t wait too much till the engine gets hot before you proceed to step 2. Just about 1-3 minutes is okay to wait. When you are done with the test, remember to close the tank with the oil filler cap.
Why does my car have smoke coming from the oil cap?
There are two main possible reasons why your engine will emit smoke from the oil cap: You should be aware of the fact that the specific amount of tolerance between the engine components determines how smooth the operations of such an engine will be at any given time.

What happens if the oil cap comes off while driving?
Those can ruin the engine. If the oil cap comes off while driving, oil will be sprayed out leading to engine ceasure. Oil spray will be followed by smoke, which if observed, damage could be reduced. Always keep the engine oil cap fully tightened so that it does not come off and oil sprayed out due to high oil pressure while acceleration
What to do if your oil filler cap falls out?
If you have severe blowby, an engine swap might be your best course of action, but find out first what the problem is. Leaving the oil filler cap loose could have led to it falling out. Runing the engine with the oil filler cap off can lead to oil spraying all over the place. Fill it with oil and replace the filler cap.
What was the fault of the oil change company?
The engine seized and will need to be replaced ($3,000). According to the mechanic, this is clearly the fault of the oil change company (Firestone) who did not sufficiently tighten the oil drain plug to proper torque specifications. It took approximately 1500 miles to vibrate loose.
