Both batteries are ‘linked’ right enough thru the alternator/battery management system. Eg if your starter battery is low enough that the door locks don’t open & you have to use the flat key then both batteries are used to start the car. Supposed to be to stop you being stranded.

I picked up a CTEK 3300 for my 2003 SL and hooked it up today. I installed the set of battery cables that connect directly to the battery terminals. Very convenient when I want to disconnect and go. I just draped the cable out the back of the trunk lid to the right with the charger itself outside on the floor of the garage.
