Why is my RAID slow?
Drives are at their fastest when they are empty. As they get closer and closer to full, they slow down. This is because hard drives, which are the essential storage component of a RAID, store data to the inner (faster) tracks first, then, as the drives fill up, data is stored to the outer tracks, which are slower.
Why is RAID 10 better than RAID1?
RAID 1 involves only two drives that are mirrored to provide resilience in the event of a single disk failure. RAID 10 involves at least four drives, and creates a RAID 0 stripe set involving two or more RAID 1 mirrors. It can also provide increased performance due to the increased number of spindles in the RAID group.

Whatever you configure as RAID 10 in the LSI meaning of the term, seems to be more something like a “RAID 100”, i.e., every “span” is it’s own RAID 10, and these spans will be put together as a RAID 0. (Btw that’s why it seems you can’t define RAID 10 for numbers of disks other than multiples of 4, or multiple of 6 when using more than 3 disks.)
