Why does my CVT whine in my Subaru Outback?
These steps had no impact on the sound. A mechanic friend of mine who knows CVTs, but not much about Subarus has listened to this and doesn’t think it is the transmission and thinks it coming from the front, but is unsure what is causing it. 2 days ago, loud humming/whirring sound started coming from the rear end of the car. The sound increased as I went above 55-60mph. It feels as if something is rotating fast, like a fan but super quiet fan. Below 30mph, its quiet as normal. I was planning to replace rear diff oil coming spring, so it has not been touched at all.

The whine in my ’13 3.6 is not exactly like the one in the video, but I’m 99% sure mine is coming from the center support bearing on the propeller shaft. The dealer has heard my whine (in more ways than one), but won’t fix it until it’s bad enough to be there all the time. Anyway, consider the propeller shaft bearing as a possibility in yours.
