Why does my pit bike keep sputtering?
Typically with most pit bikes, the problem is going to be with the spark plug or the carburetor; with the fuel system being the primary culprit. The first step we recommend is to check the efficiency of the spark plug.
Why is the spark plug on my motorcycle sputtering?
A malfunctioning spark plug will cause the cylinder it’s connected with to misfire which will ultimately cause performance issues and the motorcycle to sputter. Next, check the spark plug wires.
What causes a motorcycle to stall at idle?
Or, you could have air leaking around the throttle, just enough to lean it out at idle; the mounting boots could be the leak, or diaphragms in the carbs, that kind of thing. Wow, thanks both of you! I will try these things when my mechanic manual comes for this bike, the owners manual is like “here is the start button, a durr.”
What makes the combustion chamber of a motorcycle sputter?
The three things you need to create an explosion in the combustion chamber of a motorcycle are air, fuel, and a spark. Examining the mechanics that deal with these three components will ensure you’ll find your sputtering issue. I’ll discuss the most common reasons for sputtering.
What causes a pit bike engine to sputter?
The problem of having an engine “sputter” is typically caused by a fuel system issue. For pit bikes with smaller cc displacement engines, in order for a cylinder to fire efficiently, three separate components must work together; the fuel delivery system (carburetor), the ignition coil and wires and the spark plug.
What should I do if my motorcycle is sputtering?
Start by checking the easiest spot first which would be the spark plugs. Take out your spark plugs and make sure there is no nasty build up on them or any type of corrosion. Also make sure the point isn’t worn down and that the gap between the center and the ground electrode is the appropriate distance.

Why does my motorcycle not have a spark plug?
If there are any cracks anywhere on the wires, the spark will arc to your motorcycle frame because that’s the path of least resistance for the electricity and it won’t arc through the spark plug. With no electricity delivered to the spark plug, that will in turn cause that cylinder to misfire. You’ll simply need to get a new spark plug wire.
