Why did my OBDII not pass the smog test?
The 320 with 126,000 miles failed California SMOG test this morning. Actually passed all emissions related and visual testing but failed with the OBDII not ready for Catalyst. Approximately 3 weeks ago, or 400 miles of driving, I replaced the Lateral Motion sensor to solve a BAS/ESP issue using a used part from a donor 320.
Can a not ready Monitor Pass the smog test?
Had the truck at the SMOG referee this morning to finalize test and passed no problem. The Ref told me that in California only one monitor can be in the not ready state and still get a pass. That is the EVAP one. If any of the other systems are status not ready then no dice.
How to test a Mercedes-Benz smog test?
• Start engine and accelerate engine speed to 1400 rpm. • Allow engine to run with increased rpms for 7 minutes (or drive the vehicle for 7 minutes). Park position and allow engine to idle (with no load) for 6 seconds. Do not use A/C. • After this step turn the ignition OFF, wait ten seconds and repeat this test step.
What to do if your car fails a smog check?
The State of California Bureau of automotive repair maintains a list of these vehicles and specific remedies, if known, that can assist a motorist in completing monitors. In some cases repairs may be required, and in others test equipment is programmed to ignore some or all readiness monitors on affected vehicles.

Why did my 4Runner fail a smog test?
Two weeks ago I went to a California smog test station, and they said my 5-speed ’97 2wd 4Runner with 150k miles (with original cats and oxygen sensors) would fail because the catalytic converter monitor wasn’t ready.
How does the ECM check the emissions of a car?
That should do it. The ECM (engine control module or computer) checks it’s own emissions on all 1996 and newer cars by Federal law. When you disconnected the battery, the computer lost all of it’s stored data. The emissions protocols require a certain amount of stored data to determine the emissions condition of the car.
Can a DTC erase a smog check monitor?
If your car has recently been repaired for a problem that set a DTC (check engine on) and the technician cleared the DTC, he also erased the monitors. Also, if battery has been disconnected, replaced or needed a jump-start, the monitors may be erased.

When to run a complete smog test on a diesel?
All monitors must be complete on 1998-2006 diesel powered vehicles. Any two (2) monitors may be incomplete on 2007 and newer diesels. Some tests only run when the car sits overnight, or is allowed to cool down for several hours.

Why is my smog check OBD 2 incomplete?
There are several reasons why the monitors may be incomplete. If your car has recently been repaired for a problem that set a DTC (check engine on) and the technician cleared the DTC, he also erased the monitors. Also, if battery has been disconnected, replaced or needed a jump-start, the monitors may be erased.
How to pass an emissions ( smog ) test?
6 Proven Methods for Passing an Emissions (Smog) Test: 1. Warm up Your Car’s Engine as Much as Possible Your car’s engine burns fuel, to make sure there is complete combustion (i.e., the engine is running as clean as possible) your engine needs to warm-up.
What can cause a car to fail a smog test?
If your engine’s oil is contaminated because of inadequate oil changes, it could cause higher emissions and a failed smog test. For these reasons, always change the oil in your car to ensure the best engine performance prior to your test. 5. If Your Check Engine Light Is On, Find a Way to Turn It off
When does the OBD II emissions light come on?
MISFIRE DETECTION If an emissions problem is being caused by engine misfire, the OBD II light will flash as the misfire is occurring. But the light will not come on the first time a misfire problem is detected. It will come on only if the misfire continues during a second drive cycle and will set a P0300 series code.
How many OBD’s are performed on a vehicle?
OBD Readiness Your vehicle performs up to 11 diagnostic checks of specific emission control components such as engine, transmission, fuel systems and other emissions controls. Each diagnostic check communicates with a monitor called a readiness monitor. These diagnostic checks are performed while the vehicle is driven.
What can I do if my car is not OBD-II compliant?
If the vehicle is not OBD-II compliant, you cannot use a generic OBD-II scan tool such as ElmScan to obtain diagnostic information from your vehicle. But my car has the 16-pin OBD connector, shouldn’t it be OBD-II compliant?

When does a vehicle perform an OBD test?
The OBD (On Board Diagnostic) system is more like a computer monitoring system. An OBD monitor is a computer test or series of computer tests used to determine if an emission control device or system is failing. The vehicle performs the self-diagnostic computer test when the vehicle is driven. This is
Where is the OBD II diagnostic port on a car?
All vehicles sold in the United States from 1996 and after were mandated to haven an OB II diagnostic port installed by the manufacturer. The port on the car it typically black or white. If you are having a difficult time locating the OBD II port use the OBDII port locator here.
What does the P0300 code on an OBDII mean?
A P0300 code would indicate a random misfire (probably due to a vacuum leak, open EGR valve, etc.). If the last digit is a number other than zero, it corresponds to the cylinder number that is misfiring. A P0302 code, for example, would tell you cylinder number two is misfiring.

Why is my Mercedes not ready cat not ready?
I reset the system and rescanned for errors, no errors any longer and of course the BAS/ESP light is no longer lit. The reason I mention the above is because the SMOG Tech stated that it is common for Mercedes to generate a Cat not ready if the battery was disconnected or if certain work has occurred on the vehicle.

Can a vehicle pass the California smog inspection?
In most cases, a vehicle with incomplete readiness monitors will not pass the California smog inspection (See New Readiness Monitor Standards For OBD II Functional Inspection ). Driving the vehicle under conditions that meet the monitor enabling criteria should complete most OBD II monitors.
Can a car pass with only one smog monitor?
Note that a car can pass with some incomplete monitors…a maximum of one on 1999 and earlier cars, and only one ( The Evaporative System monitor) on model year 2000 and later gasoline powered automobiles. All monitors must be complete on 1998-2006 diesel powered vehicles.
