When to replace timing belt on Subaru Legacy?
The 92 Legacy with a shift stick and bigger engine still does a tear and outperforms the 2000 and the 2004. 250,000 easy miles. Our practice, and that of our many Subaru friends, is to do the Big Replacement (timing, belts, hoses, gaskets, etc. etc) at 100,000 then 200,000 etc. Everyone seems to think that’s all OK. Never heard anything else.
What happens when the timing chain slips off a Subaru Outback?
That means that the pistons will rise up into the cylinder when the valves are closed as part of how the engine operates. This also means that if your timing chain breaks or slips off, the camshaft is not turning in time with the crankshaft any longer, so the valves will be open as the piston rises into the cylinder and they make contact.
When to change tensioner pulley and water pump?
I want to add that you must change your tensioner pulley and water pump, if the water pump is driven by the timing belt, when your belt is changed because the ball bearings in each of these can fail after many miles for whatever cause and can or will take the timing belt out and then your engine if it is an interference type engine.
Why does my Subaru Outback make a ticking noise?
Ticking: One of the earliest warning signs that you’ll get on a problem with the timing belt in your Subaru Outback is the sound it makes. A timing belt that isn’t working properly creates a ticking noise as your engine is running. It’s a very fast-paced sound and resembles something like a roulette wheel that spins fun quickly.
Do you need to change timing belt on Liberty?
A bit of confusion – the person who sold my Liberty to me said it already has been changed but he wasn’t sure as didn’t have a report from Subaru at 100,000 service. I was reading off somewhere on the forum it says 125,000kms that timing belt needs to be changed.
What kind of timing belt does a Subaru EJ use?
These models, as well as newly released FA or FB engines all now run timing chains. All Subaru EJ series engines from 1991 to current model shapes use a high quality rubber timing belt that is not only durable but efficient as well, and Subaru have recently adjusted their timing belt service mileage upward.
How much does it cost to replace a timing belt?
While the cost of having your timing belt replaced can be a bit of a shock, it’s a lot cheaper than having to replace your engine due to a failure. The average timing belt replacement cost starts around the $500 mark, and can increase to over $1000 if removal of other engine components is required to gain access to the timing belt.
