What to use to replace steering pump on GMC Acadia?
I had to use extended nose pliers to compress the spring clamp, and then a long flat blade screwdriver to push the hose off while the clamp was compressed. I allowed this to drain into a pan. The pressure fitting is an oddball 16mm, and calls for a flare wrench. Unless you have a 16mm (.629″) flare wrench, you’re likely out of luck.
When did I replace my power steering rack?
This is the latest fix to the power steering squeaks and moans per TSB #PI 0029H and #PI 0620. I had my steering gear (rack) replaced 06/2011 and it had begun to leak and moan again due to low fluid, thus the leak and thus the fix.
How do you replace a power steering pump?
To replace the pump, the power steering fluid will first need to be drained. The serpentine or power steering belt will be removed, the hoses will be taken off, and the pump will be unbolted from the engine block. A new pump will then be installed, the lines attached, the belt reinstalled, and the fluid refilled.

Can a power steering pump be converted to Dexron VI?
It is not recommended to convert to Dexron VI for any other service to the power steering system because the pinion seal has already been exposed to the old fluid, which is the cause of the squeak condition. Converting to Dexron VI without changing the pinion seal would not prevent a pinion seal squeak in the future.
Why did my GMC Acadia need a steering pump replaced?
The initial diagnosis by my GMC Service Dept, was a failed steering box which was replaced at a cost to me of $1,300. Two weeks later the same problem re-occurred. This time the steering pump had to be replaced because it was damaged due to fluid starvation from the first leak (no cost to me).
Why is my steering rack leaking on my GMC Acadia?
Has some good info on diagnosing PS issues. If the steering rack is NOT leaking, that means it is likely able to hold pressure, so it points to the PS pump failing to make pressure, which could be felt like a “locking” problem. Prior to these problems, there were no indications of a fluid leak on the garage floor or driveway. The GMC technician explained this to me as the leaking fluid goes into a rubber boot near the gearbox which can hold the entire contents of the pump.
