What is WinMFS?
Enter WinMFS — a Windows utility to upgrade your TiVo drive. It’s still in Beta (currently build 8), but we decided to give it a whirl. Extracting the original drive from the TiVo is straightforward: break out your Torx T10 bit, remove the six screws from the rear of the TiVo and then slide open the case.

Can I clone a TiVo hard drive?
An offline clone station will successfully make a copy of your TiVo’s hard drive, but the usable space won’t be any different than the original. To do what you want requires learning how to use the software from the Upgrade Forum, or sending your machine off to Weaknees.
Can I use any hard drive for TiVo?
If you have a modern Tivo, purchased in the last 3 or 4 years and a new hard drive you do not need to worry about this. If you are upgrading a Roamio, Premiere, Virgin Media (UK), Series 3 or HD TiVo then you will need a 3.5″ SATA hard drive. For the TiVo BOLT you will need a 2.5″ laptop sized hard drive.
How do I use WinMFS?
- Step 1: Buy a bigger drive.
- Step 2: Download WinMFS.
- Step 3: Connect the drives to your PC.
- Step 4: Boot your PC and run WinMFS.
- Step 5: Run WinMFS, Troubleshoot the formatting of your New Drive so it shows up in WinMFS (in my case).
- Step 6: Wait Patiently.
- Step 7: Select “Yes” to expand the drive.
Is TiVo edge better than Bolt?
Compared to the Bolt, the TiVo Edge has a faster processor and more memory (4GB instead of 3GB), but those upgrades don’t translate to a major performance boost. The TiVo Edge for Antenna includes a backlit remote.
Can you add external storage to TiVo bolt?
The Western Digital My Book AV DVR Expander is available in a 1 TB size. The 1 TB expander will add over 140 hours of HD recording space (or over 1200 hours of standard definition recording space). The DVR Expander can be used with: TiVo BOLT®(all models)
How do I connect an external hard drive to my TiVo?
In order for you to connect your DVR Expander, you must first have a supported TiVo box, listed above.
- Unplug the TiVo box.
- Connect the eSATA cable between the DVR Expander and the TiVo box.
- Plug in the DVR Expander.
- Wait approximately 15 seconds for the hard drive to warm up.
- Plug in the TiVo box.
