Is the East Cape road sealed?
The road is sealed and pretty empty, but you’ll want to stop lots!! You walk to the East Cape Lighthouse. From Hwy 35 at Te Araroa, the lighthouse can be reached by a 25 minute drive on East Cape Road to the carpark. Here you face a 20 minute climb up 500+ steps to the lighthouse.

This first meeting led to the death of Te Maro during a skirmish with the crew. Although Cook was able to obtain some herbs to ward off scurvy, he was unable to gain many of the provisions he and his crew needed at the bay, and for this reason gave it the name Poverty Bay.

Te Araroa. (174 km from Gisborne, 160 km from Opotiki) Near the midpoint of the driving time, Te Araroa is home to another great coffee shop, the Cape Manuka Café. We didn’t have time to visit the Manuka factory on-site but did bring home a jar of our favourite east cape manuka honey.

A visit to this Maori decorated church topped my regional bucket list. Entry is by gold coin donation through an honesty box. Also in Tikitiki is a giant waka in an open paddock.
