Let’s do this!
- Secure your motorcycle. Make sure the motorcycle is in a stable and secure position.
- Remove the fuel.
- Remove fairings (if necessary).
- Remove the seat (if necessary).
- Disconnect any tank straps (if necessary).
- Remove the tank bolts.
- Disconnect the fuel pump and clear gas lines.
- Disconnect the main fuse.

How do you take the cover off a r3 tank?
Step 1: Use a 4mm or 5/32″ allen wrench to remove the bolt from the front center of the tank cover. Step 2: Use an 8mm or 5/16″ socket to remove the four bolts from the sides of the tank cover. *caution* These bolts are VERY tight, I don’t recommend using a phillips screwdriver… Step 3: Pull the tank cover off.

Disconnect your gas tank by unstrapping and unscrewing the tank. Remove the petcock, gasoline caps, and any attached hoses. Close off the fuel tank by attaching a clamp to the fuel line near the carburetor. After separating the carburetor and fuel line, hold the line above a bucket and drain it.

Steel gas tanks are very durable and, when properly constructed, will not allow gas to eat through the outer shell. They can be welded into any desired form. Plastic gas tanks are light and allow you to minimize the weight of your bike. Plastic does not rust and mitigates any noise that is produced by the gasoline moving around.
