Bend your pointer wire or whatever you have made so it lines up with one of the bolts on the clutch cover. Once you now have your reference then rotate the engine until the next piston is at TDC.

Where is the hole in the clutch on a Polaris XLT?
I ended up having a hole burning through the piston on the clutch side. It was right where the exhaust port is and that cylinder was running a little hot. I didn’t loose much compression until the sled got good and hot. Then it was a pain to start because the gas was getting right around the piston ring. here is what I would try:
