Does chain tension affect shifting?
Chain tension effects shifting. You need proper tension to release and engage the gears smoothly. I noticed that especially going from a worn out chain to a new one.
Why do my gears clunk when shifting bike?
Bike gears are cable operated – the rear gears use a derailleur to shift between sprockets on the cassette, adding to or reducing resistance. If you begin to find that your rear gears make some funny “clunking” noises or sometimes don’t work in certain cogs, this could mean you need to give them some TLC.
What causes chain slap?
Re: Chain slap causes? One cause (and not necessarily yours) is a sticky freehub so that when you coast the freehub is turning the cassette and de-tensioning the chain. You can check this by spinning the rear wheel and observing if the freehub wants to turn the pedals. You could always fit a chain stay protector.

Rubbing on the front mech would be my first suspicion, especially if it goes away if you use the small ring at the front but shift to the middle at the back. If the mech cage is touching the chain, quarter turn on the barrel adjuster for the front shifter and see if you get a gap between chain and cage.
