Do you really need a fan shroud?
The first thing we want to make sure is that you actually have a fan shroud. If you rely on a belt-driven fan for engine cooling, a fan shroud is a must to pull the air through the radiator. Without a shroud, air will take the path of least resistance, pulling air from over and under the radiator instead of through it.
How important is a fan shroud?
The fan-shroud assembly is an important component of the cooling system. While the fan is responsible for drawing in air, the fan shroud’s job is to ensure uniform air distribution to the radiator core. By assisting airflow in the engine compartment the fan shroud helps in dismissing excess heat from the engine.
Will a missing fan shroud cause overheating?
Fan Shroud If the shroud is missing or is damaged, air can escape around the shroud, reducing the amount of air pulled through the radiator by the fan. The result is less heat dissipated into the air by the radiator, causing the engine to overheat, particularly when the car is not moving.
Will not having a fan shroud cause overheating?
Operating a vehicle with a broken or damaged shroud can lead to overheating of the engine. Without it, the fan cannot properly pull air through the radiator. A vehicle that doesn’t have a fan shroud and should is likely to overheat in traffic in the same way it would if the fan was not working.
Can a car overheat without a fan?
Yes, technically your engine does not need a cooling fan to operate. If the radiator does not have cool air blowing on it constantly, it will overheat eventually, so you’d need the perfect combination of weather and traffic to drive effectively without a radiator fan.
Do you need a radiator for a fan shroud?
Fan shrouds need a way to mount to the radiator. The radiator is needed in order to make mounts for the fan shroud. Fax a drawing of your radiator to Mattson’s Inc. at (714) 893-4933 if you want a quote from us to build you a custom shroud made that will fit your mounts.
Can a pusher fan be used as a fan shroud?
If a pusher fan is the only fan used, cover as much of the radiator core as possible. Remember, shrouds cannot be used on pushers. Fan shrouds need a way to mount to the radiator. The radiator is needed in order to make mounts for the fan shroud.
Why is the fan shroud important when stopped in traffic?
Without the fan shroud, the airflow would be inefficient, and you will likely experience cooling problems. It is especially important when you’re stopped in traffic because the fan shroud directs the fan to pull low-temperature air through the radiator to help it cool. It is also in place to contribute to overall safety from an exposed fan.
Is the fan shroud in the engine bay useless?
You may think some of the things in your engine bay are pointless, like that fan shroud on the back of your radiator. We are here to tell you: LEAVE it there! You may think that a shroud is a useless piece of plastic or metal, but they really do serve a purpose.
