Do Japanese use kunyomi?
Kunyomi is a near guarantee when you’re using proper nouns. Most notably, it’s used when you’re using native Japanese proper names. Most of the common family names are pronounced using the kunyomi version of the kanji. So, names like 木村 (きむら) and 藤井 (ふじい) will be read as kunyomi.
Is kunyomi hiragana?
Kunyomi is always used in a single kanji followed by okurigana, which are hiragana characters forming part of the word. These are commonly seen in verbs and adjectives.
Is Onyomi written in katakana?
Note: Sometimes you’ll see on’yomi readings written in katakana or English, and kun’yomi readings written in hiragana. Sure, some kanji will have one reading that is way more useful than the others, but for the most part, there will be an on’yomi and kun’yomi reading worth learning.

What is the difference between on and kun readings?
On-reading is usually used when the kanji is a part of a compound (two or more kanji characters are placed side by site). Kun-reading is used when the kanji is used on its own, either as a complete noun or as adjective stems and verb stems. This is not a hard and fast rule, but at least you can make a better guess.

The Okurigana let you know information such as what form and conjugation of a verb is being used, which words with a similar Kanji is being used, and other things I haven’t learned completely yet.
