Is it possible to get a new crankset?

I’d like to get a new crankset, but i’m not quite sure what will work and what won’t. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. The main intercompatibility issues with cranksets are the connection between the crank arms and the bottom bracket spindle.

Why do I need to remove the cranks on my bike?

Cranks may be removed to replace cranks or chainrings, service the bottom bracket bearings, or to clean the chainrings. Crank systems have become more complex in recent years. To know the service options you will need to know the type of crank and type of bottom bracket bearing system installed in the bicycle.

How can I tell if my bike crank is square?

I’d recommend taking the dust caps off your crank arms and verifying this first. You may also need to remove the bolt holding the crank on the bike. If it is indeed a square taper (you’ll see a square box sized hole in the crank where the bolt was), then that’s good news. It’s really easy to find cranks that will fit a square taper bottom bracket.

What to do if left crank arm does not fit?

The left crank arm does NOT fit perfectly in the axle and the axle does not on the bearing. To have a perfect fit I put same plastic pieces between the bearing and the axle. 5 pieces to be precise. 3mm pieces of zipp tie. Push them once the the left arm is in place before the washer whit the star hole.

To check for play, grab either crankarm (not the pedal) and try to rock it back and forth perpendicular to your frame. Any movement may suggest that the bearings need to be adjusted, are damaged, or that the crank bolts are loose.

Where does the crank go on a Schwinn bike?

One Piece Cranks. One-piece cranks are found on some older Schwinn® bicycles, many children’s and BMX bikes, and on many department store-type bikes. One piece of steel forms the crank arms and goes from the pedal, through the bottom bracket, to the other pedal. This crank also acts as the bottom bracket bearing axle.

Do you need to lube the crankset bearings?

Dirt and grime quickly build up and may affect your bike’s performance. Since most modern crankset systems contain sealed bearings, you don’t need to lube the area or regrease the bearings. Simply wash the bike after each ride. However, be sure not to spray water directly at the bearing area. Also, never use a power sprayer.
