Can a new engine be installed on an old engine?
The first major challenge was getting the new motor to fit on the old engine beds. One of my biggest mistakes was not measuring the exact width of those beds before ordering the engine. Beta has a custom feet-ordering program, where they’ll build to your exact specs so the new engine can drop right into the old engine’s footprint.
How do you start an engine that’s been sitting?
If the air cleaner hasn’t been on it or if there are a lot of open holes, stuff may have gotten in it. Pull the carb and look down into the intake. If you see anything, pull the intake off and clean it out and look down into the intake ports of the heads. Now put all that stuff back together. Leave the plugs out though.
Why is my car cranking but not starting?
Started up and registered 13ish volts on the dash so I figured the alternator was still working, but possibly the battery was done. So I drove straight home, turned the car off and tried to restart the car but it wouldn’t start, cranked a little but then stopped.
What’s the best way to turn an engine over?
It’s time to see if the motor will turn over. First take the distributor cap off so you can see the rotor. Now take a breaker bar and socket and get on the crank bolt and see if you can turn the motor over by hand. Watch the rotor. If it turns with the motor, that’s good.
How often do you replace crankshafts in drag racing?
Even so, they work well enough because the typical Top Fuel racer replaces the rods after 8 to 10 runs. ProStock racers may replace the rods after 20 or 30 runs. In the lower drag racing classes, a set of aluminum rods may last 100 to 200 runs or longer. Aluminum rods can work on the street, but it requires a high quality alloy.
What should I look for when replacing a crankshaft?
Another point to keep in mind if you are building a blown engine is the extra stress the blower drive puts on the end of the crank. The added stress and flexing over time can lead to fatigue cracks and crank breakage, so look for a crank that is available with a larger diameter nose.
Which is better cast iron or performance crankshafts?
Combustion temperatures and pressures are lower in a stock engine than a performance engine, and RPM is usually limited to about 6,500 RPM or less. Consequently, a cast iron crankshaft, original equipment powder metal rods and standard bearings are usually adequate for their intended use.
