Why does my car make a clunk noise when I reverse?

The axles are the joints that transmit power from the transmission to the wheels. The same can also be caused by worn engine or transmission mounts.

As stated on other threads/sites, this noise is (apparently) the ABS doing some kind of test when the car reaches 12mph, it just happens that I normally change into 2nd at about 10mph so I hear it just after lifting changing gear. It only happens once after starting the engine each time.

Why do Harley Davidsons clunk when shifting gears?
Harley Davidson motorcycles make a loud clunking noise when shifting into gear because they have dog ring gearboxes instead of a synchromesh ring. The clunking noise that a Harley makes when shifting into gear is normal, but the clunking can be exasperated in cold weather or by a too high idle speed.

What does it mean when your car makes a loud clunk when shifting?
If you hear a loud clunk, or feel a chassis shudder, this could indicate that the torque converter mounts have disconnected or broken. Confirm this by checking the tightness of the universal joints, both front and rear of a rear-drive vehicle. Listen for a heavy clunk when shifting from neutral to reverse and back again.
