How does raw water cooling work?
In a raw water system the water is drawn up through the seacock by the water pump. The water flows through the engine and directly out the exhaust. This cooler water absorbs heat from the engine to help keep it cool. This fresh water is circulated through the engine and through a heat exchanger.

Open cooling towers release heat from water-cooled systems into the atmosphere. Hot water from the system enters the cooling tower and is distributed over the packing (heat transfer surface). Air is drawn or forced through the packing by a fan, whereby a small part of the water evaporates.
How does a closed cooling system work?
An automobile engine is a good example of a closed cooling system. Evaporation is not used in closed recirculating cooling towers. Instead, cool air rushes over a series of small tubes containing circulating coolant. Heat is transferred from the hot liquid inside the tubes to the cool air, resulting in cooling.

Most newer marine engines use an enclosed cooling system. This means that there is a small tank on the top of the engine that uses a combination of fresh water and coolant.
