What happens when your alternator gets too hot?
After running fine for 15-20 minutes my alternator will begin to heat up until the point where it is too hot to even touch. As the alternator heats up the charge of the battery begins to drop until the point where the battery drains and the car dies.
How many volts does an alternator have when the engine is off?
After replacing the alternator with a rebuilt unit, everything seems OK, except that the alternator still gets too hot to touch. The battery measures 12.2 volts with the engine off, and the alternator puts out about 13.2 volts with the engine running.
Can a car start with a bad alternator?
After sitting for enough time for the alternator to completely cool off the car will start up fine, but the process soon repeats itself. I removed the alternator and had it tested professionally and was told that there were no indicators that pointed to it being a bad alternator.
What to do if your alternator is over charging the battery?
Ask an assistant to start the engine and hold engine speed at about 1500 RPM. Measure voltage across the battery with your DMM. You should get 0.5 to 2 volts higher than base voltage. If you are getting more than 2 volts above base voltage, most likely your alternator is over-charging the battery or the battery is faulty.
