What does a crankshaft timing gear do?
The purpose of timing gears is to allow the camshaft and crankshaft to turn the timing chain. The crankshaft turns to move pistons up and down inside the cylinders. The camshaft turns to allow intake and exhaust valves on the cylinders to open and close. These components are important for proper engine timing.

The new OEM Toyota timing belt will come with it’s own marks on it. These marks serve as a Poka-yoke so that you can’t get the marks lined up wrong. Also note that Bank 1 is labeled as the R-Cam and Bank 2 is the L-Cam. The arrows also point to the front of the vehicle. Here are the Bank 1 marks…. Now for the Bank 2 marks….
Why do you need to lock down the timing belt?
Even though belts will not last as long as a chain, they are quieter and often easier to line up correctly with the cam and crank locked down. Anytime the belt is removed, the cam and crank need to be aligned to TDC No.1, which is where the marks on the crankshaft pulley line up with the pointer on the front cover.
Do you have to be dead on with timing belt alignment?
Because modern vehicles use so many electronics to control the engine with things such as crank and camshaft timing sensors, technicians need to be, as we say in the industry, “dead-on” with the timing belt alignment. The cam gear cannot be off by even a tooth, or the engine will set a DTC.
How to find timing belt marks on a Toyota 5VZ-FE?
