There are two types of Rift: Standard Nephalem Rifts, which are locked to your Torment level, so the harder your Torment level is, the harder they are. Greater Rifts, which you pick a difficulty level for, based on the highest level GR you’ve finished in the past.

So does it really matter pushing torment levels? The timer is a backup system in case you get a bad RNG streak. It will gradually push RNG in your favor. So yes, upping T levels does matter.
Is empowering greater rifts worth it?
Most of the people I see doing Greater Rifts in Switch multiplayer games are doing them unempowered. Empowering a GR gives you a bonus gem upgrade attempt (netting 5 attempts if you don’t die, 4 if you do). Very nice for upgrading gems for augmenting etc.
