Is there a washer behind the spider gear?
All i can tell is there is a washer behind the spider gear that is concave. Is it possible it has flatened allowing the movement, or do i have other problems? This is with the rear carrier removed from the axle housing, the pin is slide in the gears, with the lock bolt removed (it broke).
What to do if your spider gears are bad?
The gears are part of the differential which is attached to the drive shaft of the vehicle. There are many signs of a spider gear beginning to age and requiring replacement. If you are not familiar in working with vehicle differentials, contact a trusted auto repair store to have the gears inspected.
What happens when you change the bearings on a spider?
New bearings shouldn’t affect the shims/side clearance. those shims, iirc, adjust the backlash on the gears. you change them, and you will toast the gear set. it is not uncommon to have to slightly “persuade” the unit in with a rubber hammer. Also make sure the carrier bearing you swapped is fully seated.
How do you put spacer in spider gear?
Put the left spacer in first with the differential and bearing races. Then use a screwdriver to push everything to the left side and get the right shim started between the race and housing. Use a small hammer to tap the spacer into place. It’s going to be tight, but it should go. Don’t force it toomuch or you will break the spacer.

What’s the difference between Shim washers and regular washers?
For shafts, washers are used to stop gears or bearings being able to slide up and down a shaft or two push two gears closer together. Shim washers differ from regular washers by being manufactured to tighter tolerances and (at least for rc cars) being thinner than usual.
What does a shim do on a car shaft?
For the newbies out there, ‘shimming’ is just the process of taking up the slack in the fitment in two parts by installing a thin ‘shim’ in the gap. For shafts, washers are used to stop gears or bearings being able to slide up and down a shaft or two push two gears closer together.
What to do with old spider gear bearings?
The old bearings were probably worn enough that they allowed the differential to be a little loose. Put the left spacer in first with the differential and bearing races. Then use a screwdriver to push everything to the left side and get the right shim started between the race and housing.
