It has had some problems with the transmission over the years, and particular in 2017. That’s a severe problem for any kind of transmission to have. The 2014 and 2015 models of the Subaru Forester also had problems with the CVT transmission fairly early in the vehicle’s life.

Because there are no gears in a CVT, it allows for manual “shifting.” The belt-and-pulley system moves to preset points that simulate changing gears. Even if you hate the CVT in the new 2019 Subaru Forester, Outback, Crosstrek and Ascent all-wheel-drive vehicles, Subaru will never leave it.
How much does it cost to service a CVT transmission?

When was the last year for CVT in the 3.6 Outback?
Just last week a Service Advisor at the local Subaru dealership (which, coincidentally, is the largest Subaru dealership in the U.S.) told me that ’09 was the last year they put an auto tranny in the 3.6 and they’ve been nothing but CVTs ever since. Can someone tell me for certain when the last year for auto transmissions in the 3.6 Outbacks was?
Why does my Subaru Outback accelerate faster than my CVT?
It wasn’t that it was bad before, but under certain conditions, usually between 20 and 30MPH, it would not accelerate smoothly with a slight throttle increase. Now it’s back to normal. My wifes 2105 2.5 OB seems to accelerate quicker than my 2017 2.5 OB. I think it has to do with my CVT trying to go to the highest gear possible for the best MPG.
How do you reset CVT on Subaru Outback?
Basically, after reconnecting the battery, you put the ignition in the ON position without starting the engine (2 presses with your foot off the brake for pushbutton start). Leave it there for at least 10 seconds for the throttle to complete adjustment.

I hope someone can give me the straight scoop on the CVT in the 3.6 litre engine Outback versions. I’ve read in a car magazine that Subaru is still putting the “old school” conventional automatic transmission in the Outback versions equipped with the 3.6.
