How Thick Should MDF Shelves Be? Commonly, 3/4″ (18mm) thick MDF sheets are used for shelving. Don’t use MDF sheets that are thinner than 3/4″ (18mm) for shelves because they will sag a lot easier. You can use sheets that are thicker than 3/4″ (18mm) like 1″ (25mm) but workability with the MDF will be a lot harder.
