The Hondamatic transmission uses standard engine oil as hydraulic fluid. Upon engagement by the centrifugal clutch, the engine turns the transmission’s pump-side outer body, causing the fixed-angle pump-side swash plate within to rotate, sequentially stroking the pump side pistons.

When did the Honda CM400A Hondamatic come out?
In the mid 1970s, at least one major motorcycle manufacturer took a crack at solving the problem. In 1976, Honda introduced the CB750A Hondamatic — “A” standing for automatic. Honda realized the 750 engine was a bit much for the entry-level Hondamatic, so it introduced the more beginner-friendly CB400A in 1978.

Can you change the needles on a Honda CM400?
Honda recommends buying new floats and needles if the adjustment is off, but you can make very minor adjustments by bending the metal tabs on top of the needles. This is delicate and you risk breaking them though so be careful. After cleaning a the carbs I have come upon a lean issue.
