How does ignition timing and spark advance ignition timing work?
Ignition timing and spark advance IGNITION TIMING Most engines (except diesels) use an electric spark to ignite a fuel/air mixture. The fuel burns and powers the car. This electric spark has to happen at exactly the right time or the engine will not run properly. This is called “Ignition Timing”.
Do you need distributor timing for ignition timing?
Engine ignition timing ( distributor spark timing) is the foundation of any tune-up. It is generally the first step you need to perform as all other tune-up and carburetor adjustments depend on ignition timing being correct. If you have the distributor out of the engine, see Installing Distributor . The exact orientation is not important.
How do you change the timing belt on a car?
The following photos show how to replace the timing belt. Before changing the timing belt, it is good practice to set the engine to TDC. Do this by rotating the crankshaft pulley clockwise until the mark on the crank pulley is aligned with the right hand pointer on the timing finger (refer photo 2).
What’s the ignition timing for a Drag Race Engine?
Ignition timing is a tuning tool for professional Top Fuel drag race engine builders. The spark advance in a 10,000+ hp nitro-burning engine is typically as follows: Idle/staging is typically 55 degrees to ignite the cylinders with a rich idle mixture. Launch typically 50-53 degrees adjusted for an optimum power at launch.

What do you need to know about timing belts?
Downloadable/printable Timing Belt Tooth Profiles and Pitches (.pdf) Note the shape of the timing belt pulley teeth (tooth profile); if the valley between the teeth is curved than it is an HTD style timing belt. If the valley between the teeth is flat than it is and PolyChain GT style timing belt.
Can you adjust the timing on a car with no distributor?
Many of these have no distributor: the computer fires multiple coils directly. You cannot adjust the timing on a vehicle that has no distributor, unless you reprogram the computer. SPARK ADVANCE To get the most power out of a motor the spark has to happen a bit before it gets to the top of the cylinder.
How do you measure a timing belt pulley?
There should be two (2) measurements for this since the majority of timing belt drives has a means in place for tensioning the belts. The two distances required will have one of the shafts in the all the way forward position and the other in the all the way backward position. Count the number of teeth on both timing belt pulleys.
