Why is the heater not working on my Nissan Versa?

What kind of noise does a Nissan Versa make?
I have a 2009 Nissan Versa. This morning the ventilation/AC fan started making an awful noise, rather like a Piper Cub at takeoff. It also vibrated strongly, especially at the 3-4 settings.
