Where is the tailgate light on a Jeep Cherokee?
In our Jeep, this light is on the tailgate door itself, rather than on the roof as indicated by the owner’s manual — there is no light there. But the cover of the light does not push in, nor does it appear to have a switch of any kind. So, we could not get the interior lights to shut off. Google has proved nearly useless in this matter.
How do I shut off the interior lights in my Jeep?
You can just cock the door latch to close the switch and make it think the gate is closed. Take a smallish screwdriver and just simulate what the latch does, i.e. press on the mechanism where the latch would. Make sure to de-cock the latch before actually closing the door or else it will slam against the lock. 2nding Rhomboid.

Why are the lights not turning off on my Jeep Grand Cherokee?
That dimmer switch does have an interior light setting which will connect the circuit and allow the power supply to continue to the bulbs. If possible, you may want to replace that switch. The only way to verify that the switch is the electrical issue is with a voltmeter or by going ahead and replacing it.

What happens if the warning goes away on a Grand Cherokee?
If the warning goes away, then the latch is at fault and will need to be replaced. If the warning stays on with it disconnected, then a search for the short in the wire will need to be performed. Hopefully it is just the latch.
