What was the transmission problem on a 2003 Jeep Liberty?
The torque converter on the Jeep had to be repaired and the transmission rebuilt. Not sure if was CV or differential joint, but was basically same problem as CV joint. Significant noise, axle would eventually break if not repaired. Required full removal and replacement of front axle (apparently can’t do just one side).
Where does the noise come from on a Jeep Liberty?
Its just started to tick at cold start up for the first 5-10 seconds and the noise seems to be coming from the front right top end of the engine. Noise is dependent on engine speed and I’m not sure what to think of it yet. Its not dependent on outside temperature.
What makes the rattle go away on a Jeep Liberty?
I can make it go away by revving the engine several times up to 2500 – 3000 RPM’s; seems like the increased oil flow from higher speeds temporarily stops the rattle/knock. Are there oil galleys in the front top of the engine that get clogged? Is it coincidental that revving the engine makes the rattle disappear?

Why does my Jeep Liberty not Slam shift?
Damage in transmission resulted in a full transmission rebuild and torque converter replacement. 4wd module replaced on second trip. Transmission sometimes not shifting into 4th and slam shifting other times. Asked the dealership to investigate the TSBs re: transmission. Transmission oil pan need replacing as it leaked due to corrosion.
What causes gears to chatter in Jeep Liberty?
Insufficient gear oil due to a leak can cause the gears to chatter. Check the transmission oil seal or vehicle speed sensor O-ring. Drive the vehicle and check for gear slippage, noise or no drive in forward or reverse gears. Lack of automatic transmission fluid can cause these issues.
