What was the low coolant warning light on my 2002 Golf?

My 2002 Mk4 Golf with 1.9 TDI PD engine had low coolant warning light came on the dashboard so I topped up the coolant level. The next day the same thing happened so the coolant was escaping somewhere. I found a puddle of water underneath the engine so had an idea of the location to look.

Why is my coolant not working on my Mk4 Golf?

On my Mk4 Golf this fault appeared, and £12 later I had a new expansion tank. The low level sensor corrodes and gives spurious signal. It can be scraped clean, but mine was too far gone. Oh, and that £12 was from the dealer, new, for the tank, lid and sensor.
