What kind of problems can a small engine have?
These problems can range from a faulty spark plug lead, shorted kill switch or damage to the flywheel. To test and fix possible problems, check out our Small Engine Ignition Systems FAQ. Is your Engine’s Exhaust smoking? If the engine is emitting white or blue smoke, this means your engine is burning oil.
Can a starter fail and then work intermittently?
Or, just a dead spot on the starter. It certainly can happen. It’s probably something that replacing the starter would fix, but not necessarily (example being the one I had where it was a ground strap the detached and was just sometimes resting in the right spot.
What causes an engine to stall while idling?
This can upset the air/fuel mixture causing idle, stalling and hesitation problems. Cleaning the airflow sensor wire with aerosol electronics cleaner; can often restore normal operation and cure the problem. If the engine stalls while idling or driving, the engine may be running out of fuel.
Can a bad ignition coil cause an engine to stop?
Some ignition systems will use one coil to provide the spark for all of the cylinders, however most newer designs use an individual coil for each cylinder. As the ignition coil is the component responsible for generating the engine spark, any problems with it can quickly lead to engine performance issues.

How often do engine misfires cause performance problems?
So, no engine fires every cylinder 100 percent of the time. Consequently, a few misfires are to be expected and should not cause, major performance problems. But, if misfires occur too often, they can make the engine idle or run rough.
What to look for in an engine problem?
Here are some of the major engine problem symptoms to look out for, and how you can do preliminary engine diagnosis. The only sound worse than your engine stopping altogether is the ‘death knock’. If you’ve ever heard an engine knocking, you’re aware of the pain it causes.
What happens if you leave your car engine unattended?
The longer it’s left unattended, the more damage can result. If your engine runs out of oil, you could develop that dreaded engine knock or even a blown engine, and need a whole engine replacement. Some engine problems are because of external systems.
