A comprehensive SunSmart policy provides clear, evidence-based guidelines that address sun protective behaviours, environments and learning to minimise UV exposure and skin cancer risk. Ideally staff, children and families are involved in the development and review of the SunSmart policy.
Do I need a hat if I wear sunscreen?
Hat. For the most protection, wear a hat that has a brim all the way around that shades your face, ears, and the back of your neck. A tightly woven fabric, such as canvas, works best to protect your skin from UV rays. Avoid straw hats with holes that let sunlight through.

What to look for in a SUN Smart Hat?
When choosing a sun smart hat, make sure that your hat: Adequately shades the whole face. Is made of a close weave fabric that does not allow light to get through. Has a dark lining to reduce the amount of UV radiation being reflected onto the face and eyes.
Can a baseball cap be a SunSmart hat?
Baseball caps are not SunSmart as they leave parts of the face, neck and ears unprotected from the sun’s harmful UV. Ensuring all students wear a SunSmart hat can be a challenge. In our work with NSW primary schools, we’ve found that there are three areas that successful schools address, represented in the model below.
