ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The National Hurricane Center (NHC) on Wednesday morning lowered the odds of development of Invest 93-L to 10-percent. Invest 93-L is a tropical wave located east of the Windward Islands.
Why is it called Invest 92l?
Invests are numbered from 90 to 99 and assigned an “L” to the name when the disturbance has developed in the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico. It is at this point that the storm receives a name. If winds strengthen to 74 mph or more, the storm becomes a hurricane.

Why are invests numbered 90 99?
Those numbers are for designated systems (depressions, tropical storms, hurricanes). The NHC needed to use a classification range that was above the highest number of active storms that might be seen in a season, so they use 90-99 for invests.
What does invest 91 mean?
In the eastern Pacific, you would see Invest 90-E, Invest 91-E, etc. This naming convention is used by the National Hurricane Center to identify weather features they are monitoring for potential future development into a tropical depression or a tropical storm.
