What is crank case breather?
The source of this fresh air is the “crankcase breather”, which is usually ducted from the engine’s intake manifold. The breather is usually provided with baffles and filters to prevent oil mist and vapour from fouling the air filter.
Why is oil leaking from my Vulcan air filter case?
It’s part of vapor from the crankcase. By federal regulation, the vapor from the crankcase is not allowed to dispose into the roadway. It should be reburned. If it’s a thin mist or small buildup in the air intake case, consider it’s normal. However it’s flooded there, it must have some issue with the engine, esp on large V-twin.

What happens to the crankcase ventilation in a VW?
You get less crankcase ventilation and some more unmeasured air this way but at least the ventilation doesn’t get blocked and/or the engine doesn’t suck in rubber pieces and too much oil.
