Well of course I usually deal with under head valve engines that require a re torque at least 3 times minimum when stone cold. As we know real engines don’t have valve covers.

You won’t get an accurrate torque if you don’t back them off a little bit (maybe 1/16 of a turn). When you torque the heads the first time, bring them all down to torque. Then one by one, back them off a bit and re-torque them.

To each their own but I always torque them twice before buttoning up an engine. The second torquing is usually done after the engine has been sitting all day or overnight.
