The results will show a probability of paternity which shows how likely it is that the tested man is the biological father. In this case, our results will be more than 99.99% accurate. How long does it take to get my patient’s results? You will receive your patient’s results about two weeks after Natera receives the sample.
How much fetal DNA is needed for NIPT?
All methods of NIPT require a minimum fetal fraction for accurate trisomy screening, commonly estimated at 4% (4). Several NIPT providers will fail NIPT samples at fetal fractions below this level.
Can blood test determine paternity?

How is a non-invasive prenatal paternity test?
During pregnancy, fetal DNA is present in the maternal blood. Paternity can be determined by sequencing and analysing cell-free fetal DNA extracted from the maternal blood. This test is non-invasive, only requiring a blood sample from the mother which is safe for both the mother and the unborn child.

Why is NIPT not covered by insurance?
NIPT cannot detect neural tube defects, such as spina bifida, and physical birth defects like a cleft palate. Because this is a new test, not all insurance plans cover it and those that do typically cover the test only if there is a higher than average risk of a chromosomal abnormality.
How reliable is NIPT test?
NIPT is a highly accurate screen, however, it is not 100% accurate. It is not considered a diagnostic test (see What are my other options?). The detection rate is laboratory-dependent but is typically between 90-99% for high-risk, singleton (only one baby) pregnancies with false positive rates of less than 1%.
