Can you disconnect the front differential?
There’s no way to disable the differential that I know of other than the 4WD disconnect on the passenger side of the oil pan. If you have AWD, you’re SOL. I suppose you could disassemble the CV shafts, use only the outer joint to hold the wheel bearing assemblies together, and then remove the front driveshaft.
What happens if your drive shaft breaks while driving?
A broken driveshaft can prevent wheels from turning properly, giving you trouble when trying to make turns. This issue limits your overall control of the car. You need any issues that prevent you from driving the car correctly addressed right away for safe driving and continued use of the vehicle.
Can a front drive shaft be disconnected from a rear drive shaft?
IT also depends on your AWD transfer case, however you cannot disable an axle on a AWD vehicle. If you disconnect drive shaft to the rear axle the car will not move. That is because the center diff cannot transfer 100% of the power to the front drive shaft, so it will move until the viscous coupling loses all ability to resist shear.
Can a 4WD truck drive without a front drive shaft?
Can you drive a 4WD truck without a front or rear drive shaft? Yes, this is possible if you drive a traditional 4WD with a lockable center differential. Remove the damaged drive shaft and lock the center differential. This will allow the transfer box to transfer power to the front or rear drive shaft.
Can you lock the center differential on an AWD car?
AWD vehicles are a different ball game since the power is permanently transferred to both front and rear drive shafts. Most AWD do not allow you to lock the center differential, thus not giving you the option to force the power to either the front or rear drive shafts.
Can you drive a 4WD vehicle without a transfer case?
If you are driving a 4WD vehicle then all the power is sent to the drive shafts to the differentials through the transfer case. Without a transfer case, you will not be able to drive the vehicle since the power is split 50/50 to the front and rear drive shafts and in 4WD or 4H mode.

Is the Remco drive shaft disconnect for rear wheel drive?
The Remco Drive Shaft Disconnect for rear wheel drive vehicles is a very good unit to allow 2 wheel units to be towed 4 down. At one time they also made disconnects for front wheeled drive vehicles. However they were a real difficult to disengage and engage. Had to get on the ground under the unit for both shafts.
How does a drive shaft King disconnect work?
Drive Shaft King in Dallas, TX made mine. David explained that the disconnect have splines and will only engage one way. This allows them to balance the drive shaft and it will stay in alignment and balance. David gave me a history of Drive Shafts. As cars got longer the d/s got longer.
